I'm an independent UK travel advisor, and Betty Books Travel is a personalised holiday planning service covering cruises, city breaks and family holidays. I've been the one organising the holidays for my friends and family for as long as I can remember, so when the chance came up to do it properly, as a business, it was an easy decision. Holidays are magical, being part of making that happen for people never gets old.
Since 2024
I joined the travel industry in April 2024. Travel had always been something I loved, and planning trips for the people around me came naturally, so setting up on my own felt less like a leap and more like the next step.
What I enjoy most is the research. Digging into a destination, finding out what makes it special, is genuinely one of my favourite parts of the job. The only downside is my own holiday wish list keeps growing faster than I can book it.
What I've learned
Not everyone's idea of a good hotel, or good value, is the same. My preferences are not yours, and that's exactly why I don't work from a fixed template. I ask the questions that actually matter: adults-only or family-friendly, lively or quiet, and what you'd like to spend, so the options I bring back are chosen for you.
Water is my happy place, cruises especially, and it shows in how much I enjoy planning them. But whatever the trip, the approach is the same: understand you first, then find the holiday that fits.
The Norwegian Fjords, the long way round
One of my favourite trips was a Norwegian Fjords cruise. The scenery was even more spectacular than I'd imagined, and I'm so glad I didn't let the travel logistics put me off.
At first, I almost ruled it out because there weren't any direct flights from Glasgow to the port in Kiel. It looked complicated, with a connecting flight and train journey, and I wondered if it would be more hassle than it was worth.
Thankfully, I looked into it properly. Instead of trying to do everything in one day, we flew to Hamburg, stayed overnight, then travelled to Kiel the next day and enjoyed a relaxed evening before boarding the ship. We did the same on the way home.
Not only did it remove the stress of delayed flights and tight connections, it added a couple of extra days to our holiday. The whole trip was smooth, enjoyable and far easier than I'd expected.
The lesson? Don't dismiss a destination just because it isn't directly accessible from your local airport. Some of the best holidays take a little more planning, and that's where I can help.
